AERONAUTICAL / AEROSPACE ENGINEERING

INTRODUCTION

Aeronautical / Aerospace Engineering is one of the most challenging fields of engineering with a wide scope for growth. This field deals with the development of new technology in the field of aviation, space exploration and Defence systems. It specializes in the designing, construction, development, testing, operation and maintenance of both commercial and military aircraft, spacecrafts and their components as well as satellites and missiles.

Individuals who study postgraduate courses are; highly intelligent, excellent team players, keen on challenges, self-motivated, innovative and lateral thinkers. They also have the capacity for highly technical and analytical thinking.. Though highly paid, the work is very demanding.

The specializations includes in areas like structural design, navigational guidance and control systems, instrumentation and communication or production methods or it can be in a particular product such as military aircrafts, passenger planes, helicopters, satellites, rockets etc. They find a very good demand in airlines, aircraft manufacturing units, air turbine production plants or design development programmes for the aviation industry. Studying an aeronautical engineering degree can be your passport to a successful and rewarding career within the aerospace industry. The basic degree required for becoming an aeronautical engineer is a BE or a B.Tech. One can also acquire a diploma in aeronautical engineering. While most of the reputed engineering colleges and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in India offer degree and post-graduate degree courses in aeronautical engineering, polytechnics have diploma courses on offer.

ELIGIBILITY & COURSE AREA.

For enrolment in a B.E. or B.Tech. Course in Aeronautical Engineering one must have passed the higher secondary examinations or 10+2 as it is popularly known, with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects along with a good aggregate. It is also mandatory to qualify in the Joint Entrance Examinations (J.E.E.) which the IIT’s conduct in January and May every year to get an entry through the hallowed portals of these institutes and pursue a B.Tech course in aeronautical engineering. Besides the IIT’s there are some institutes which have their own entrance and other examinations conducted across states or on an all-India basis.

REMUNERATION

Engineers in government organizations are paid official scales while those in the private sector are paid according to the scales decided by the management of the company. The approximate starting salaries in the government /public sectors such as HAL, NAL are Rs. 8,000 to Rs.10, 000 (excluding other allowances). In the private sector, the scales are decided by the management of the company and are approximately Rs.8, 000 to Rs.15,000 per month plus perks. Engineering graduates with management degrees get a starting salary of Rs.10, 000 to Rs.40, 000 per month plus perks. Entrepreneurs can earn above Rs.20, 000/- per month. Airline professionals get fringe benefits of free travel for self and family also, apart from numerous other perks. Career opportunities can be found with:

  • Many leading aerospace employers
  • The Armed Forces
  • Government departments such as the Department for Trade and Industry (DTI), Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Department for Environment, Transport and Regions (DETR)
  • Agencies like the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) and Defence Procurement Agency (DPA)
  • Regulatory authorities like the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
  • Airline operators

Small and medium employers (SMEs) who provide technical services or manufacture specialist products to supply to the aerospace industry
